Evaluation question four

I have learnt many things whilst creating this magazine. For example Photoshop for creating my front cover for the magazine. I did have a basic knowledge of Photoshop such as how to set the page up, importing a photo and editing things like hue and saturation. But then there were some things that I didn't have a clue how to do. I learnt how to cut around an image and get rid of the background then replace it with another. I also learnt about layers and how it is important to get them in the right order otherwise items on the page will go somewhere you don't want them to                         be.

But I also had to upload everything to this blog which I had never done before. I learnt about how to upload images and videos. Plus how to use scribd which is really handy when uploading word documents onto this blog.

Creating my contents page in indesign was also a new thing to me as I had never used it before. I learnt that creating columns and margins was important as otherwise you wouldn't know where anything would go and it would end up wonky. I also found out that you should use Photoshop and indesign together. You can do this by editing items such as pictures you want to use in Photoshop so then you can just place them into indesign. This is because indesign is used for just making the final product where as Photoshop isn't and it is mainly used for manipulating pictures and things like that for the final outcome.

These skills will help me in the future when creating other products such as my music magazine.

Evaluation question three

Front cover

I choose multiple ways in which to attract and address my target audience. First of all I choose a big, bold font that you don't normally see on magazines, plus as it is on a white background it stands out against the trees.

The snappiness of the cover lines attract my audience as they are to the point so they will want to go straight to the page where this article is. I also coloured them white so they would stand out against the background.

Even though the background is not brightly coloured it still stands out and relates to the surroundings students will be in and recognise. But what does stand out is the brightly coloured file the model is holding. This brings peoples eyes to it straight away and with the connection of school it will attract students more then anybody else.

To attract my audiences attention on the buzz word I put it in a bright pink box which makes it also stand out against everything else. I also did this for the slogan underneath the title.

Contents page

To attract and address my audience in the contents page I put all of my sub-headings in brightly coloured boxes so that it would attract there attention.

I also made sure that certain fonts were used for certain things. For example I used two separate fonts for the sub-headings and for the articles titles. This makes it visually more attractive then just having one font used over and over again.

Even though the background is white it makes everything else stand out even more.

By making some of the items on my contents page not as neat such as the pictures it makes it seem more like a students magazine and not one for elderly people as there magazines can be quit neat.

Finally the social networking icons in the middle of the page is relevant to my audience. This will make them want to follow or like the magazines page so they will always get updates about it so may potentially buy it more often instead of just forgetting about it.

Photoshop screen grabs

First of all I choose the image I wanted to be on the front cover and put it into place as this is the background for what is going on the magazine. I positioned my model in the picture more to the right hand side as my tag lines will be going on the left-hand side.

As I thought the picture looked dull I edited it with the hue/saturation tool to give it more colour and to make it brighter.

The next step I did was to add the heading. To do this I had to create a new layer and place it so that it would be behind the head of the model. I could of gotten rid of the white background but I didn't as I liked the simplicity of it and it stood out more because of the white background.

After I added the heading I the created a slogan. I put this in white writing with a purple background as this goes with the blue of the folder and it stands out more.

Then I started to add the tag lines which shows some of the things that will be included in the magazine. These need to be snappy and sharp to grab the attention of the customer and need to be relevant to my target audience. I created enough of these so that they spread along the whole of the left-hand side was covered as this is what will be showing when on displayed. Next I put on a barcode in the bottom right-hand side and then a buzz word next to the models head on the right-hand side. (I couldn't show screen grabs for these two stages as my computer wouldn't let me take anymore.) For all of these stages you need to create a new layer as it makes it easier to move them round on to put them behind and in front of other objects on the page.

College magazine fonts

To get the correct font for my college magazine I went on a website called da font which gives you hundreds of fonts for what ever you need it for. Your target audience in a way restricts what fonts you can choose whether it is for children, adults, pensioners or teenagers as different fonts attract different types of people. So as my target audience is 16-20 years old, plus it is a college magazine, I wanted a slightly messy font but have the typical university/school font style. So I took this into mind and selected a few fonts that could potentially fit what I wanted. I then asked several people what font they liked the best, from this I made my decision. Below are the fonts that I choose but in the end I choose the top font.

Pictures for college magazine

I took a wide range of pictures for my college magazine for both the front cover and content page. For the front cover I took semi photos of the models which means they are only of the top part of the body. I did this as it is a convention of a magazine and it means the audience will be able to see the models face more clearly.

But for the content page I took photos of my models in groups. I did this because the magazine needs to promote college life in a good way by making it seem friendly and happy. But to improve on the photos I need to have male models as all of mine were female so it really restricts the target audience to one gender where as this is a generic magazine so should appeal to everybody not just one type of person.

Audience Profile

This is my audience profile that I created for my college magazine. It tells me what my target audience is and what there interests are. This will help me decide that the magazine should include and in some ways what it should look like. I gathered this from the data collected from my questionnaire.

College magazine questionnaire data

This is the data I collected from my college magazine questionnaire which I put each individual question as a bar chart to make it easier to understand. each piece of data will tell me what I should include in my magazine which would fit the majority of people.

College magazine questionnaire

This is my questionnaire which I handed out ten of to students around City College Norwich. I did this did to get feedback from students of what they want from a college magazine. I will then process the information to then get the best outcome from my own college magazine.

definition of a magazine

A magazine is a booklet with a collection of article, pictures and features that are to do with the genre of a magazine. This could be fashion, sport, lifestyle, music, travel and many others. They attract a specific target audience such as a sewing magazine would attract an older audience rather then a rock music magazine would attract a younger audience. Magazines come out weekly, monthly or every six months and this then may effect the price so weekly ones would be cheaper then monthly ones. They may then attract a more wealthy audience.
